Writing History is a history, politics, and current affairs newsletter by Calgary based historian and writer Scott Dumonceaux, PhD.

I write stories that provide historical context to political news, debates, and policies discussions and engage with current affairs and conversations about how we’re writing the history of tomorrow.

My content is driven by the news cycle. Reoccurring series also explore long-term political developments, ideologies, and social and cultural ideas that have deep historical roots and encourage us to reassess our assumptions and how we think about the world.

My goal is to provide a new perspective on what’s in the news. I like to take the time to think about the day-to-day cycle of political news and develop opinions that place news stories in both the short-term context of our political moment and long-term historical narratives that help explain how we got here and where we might be going next.

I’m interested in the process of writing history - both in the past and present - how historians write narratives, challenge myths, and examine our past and how history continues in the present, how the actions of politicians, activists, journalists and other individuals and groups are writing history today and writing the history of tomorrow. I write about the intersection of history and politics, culture, environmentalism, education, and even health and fitness. I want to bridge gap between academic and public history and foster engaging and meaningful discussions of our past, present and future.

Please subscribe for what I hope are interesting and engaging discussions.
